Scams to Avoid When Purchasing Jewelry

The process of purchasing jewelry can be fun, but with so many things to look out for, it can also be very stressful! There are plenty of guides out there on what to look for when purchasing jewelry, but here are some little known things you may not find in any other guide. These tips should help you have a more enjoyable and safe jewelry shopping experience.

1) Make sure that you know if the diamonds or gemstones you are purchasing are genuine or lab-created

This makes a difference in not only the quality of the item you are receiving, but it should also make a huge difference in the price. Genuine stones are far more rare, and therefore expensive, than lab-created stones. So make sure you know what you are getting and that the price reflects the quality.

2) Make sure the diamonds you are purchasing are conflict-free

At Allurez, we fully support the Kimberley Process and ensure that every single diamond that comes in and out of our facility are 100% conflict-free. With all of the controversy shedding light on the “Blood Diamond” industry in recent years, you should make sure to choose a company that advertises the use of conflict-free stones.

3) Read Online Reviews

In the age of technology, it is so easy to search a company’s name online and read about their reputation. However, you might also want to keep in mind that the majority of the customers that actually take the time to write a review are often the dissatisfied ones (think about it, how often have you gone online just to write a good review?). But you can still gauge by the amount of negative reviews a company has, and what exactly is being said in these reviews, how reputable a business is. If the company you are searching for has absolutely no online reviews, whether they be negative or positive, beware. This may mean they are a rather new company that is just starting out and does not have a lot of experience, or they might be a scam. To make a long story short, do your research!

4) If you are buying a diamond, make sure it is certified

This is especially true for larger loose stones, like the ones that are to be set in engagement rings. You can, and should, request to view the diamond certificate prior to purchasing the diamond. If the diamond is not certified, make sure it comes with an appraisal from a reputable third party jeweler.

5)Do Your Research

It is a very good idea to do your research before making any large jewelry purchase. Do not walk into that jewelry store without knowing your stuff! If you are purchasing a diamond, know all about the 4C’s. It is also good to research diamond certification and the different companies that certify stones, because it does make a difference. Allurez has a whole section on our website solely dedicated to Jewelry Education. It is also good to do your research so you can learn how to properly care for your jewelry once you have purchased it. This is especially true of gemstone jewelry, as certain gemstones need special care.

6) Know the return policies

When making any big purchase, as is the case with most jewelry, you want to make sure that there is a return policy in case the item does not live up to your expectations. At Allurez, we offer a 30 day return policy, allowing our customers plenty of time to decide whether or not they love the item. However, some companies may have very specific policies about certain items, so it is better to be safe and read all of each individual company’s return policies, which should be visible on their website, or you can just simply ask a sales representative, prior to making your purchase.

In summation, buying jewelry can be overwhelming and scary, but if you choose the right company, and follow these steps, the experience should be safe, easy and fun!
