October is a month which is adorned with two birthstones, Opal and Tourmaline. The more well recognized of the two is Opal.
Opal is a radiant gemstone formed by non-crystalline silica gel. The particles are packed together in specific arrangements giving it its characteristic luminosity. Opal is often the most common purchase for an October birthstone, but its sister birthstone is equally beautiful and even has health benefits.
Tourmaline, is a complex gemstone which comes in a variety of different colors. The most well known tourmaline is pink, but often another favorite is referred to as “watermelon tourmaline” which contains green, pink and white colors as a tri-color gemstone.
Tourmaline is made up of a crystalline boron silicate compound which is said to have mystical powers. These “mystical powers” might be an exaggeration, but tourmaline does have the ability to generate an electric charge as well as emit negative ions and far infrared rays. These far infrared rays can penetrate all layers of our bodies. It is thought that far infrared rays and negative ions gently sooth and detox the body and mind. In fact, scientists have reported that negative ions are a very important determinant of mood.
The health benefits of tourmaline is no secret, celebrities like Zooey Deschanel and Selena Gomez have been spotted wearing gorgeous tourmaline cocktail rings on the red carpet. Due to its diverse range of colors you will be surprised how many of your favorite pieces, show cased by celebrities, contain this radiant stone. With this Sunday’s season premiere of Shameless we cannot go without mentioning the gorgeous Emmy Rossum and her black tourmaline and diamond dangling earrings which she wore last year at the Bowen Smith Wildlife Show in West Hollywood.
