Engagement season is upon us! While most couples get engaged during the holiday season, between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, Christmas continues to be the most popular day to get engaged. It’s even been reported that 7 out of the 10 most popular days to get engaged taking place in December.

Indeed we’ve had a lot of celebrities get engaged in the last half of 2020, including Gwen Stefani, Lily Collins and Gabourey Sidibe. With that in mind we’re already looking ahead to 2021 and wondering what engagement rings will be trendy and popular in the new year. That’s where the jewelry experts come in.

Here are three engagement ring styles that experts predict will be huge in 2021.

Solitaire engagement rings

“Where elaborate halos and other diamond-encrusted settings have been all the rage in recent years, there’s been a shift towards simplicity in 2020,” Shelley Brown, The Knot’s senior fashion and beauty editor, told Refinery29. Brown added that after a rise in popularity this year, simple solitaire engagement rings and solitaire settings will continue to be supremely popular in 2021. She said, “The diamond shape may vary, like Lily Collins’ rose-cut diamond or Jasmine Tookes’ oval diamond, but the settings tend to be very clean, without a lot of intricate detail.”

Also over the last few months, there have been more requests than usual for the simple style, according to Brown. She added, “Solitaire settings with one — usually very large — diamond have been trending in 2020 among celebrities.”

Blue engagement rings

Another engagement ring trend that Brown predicts for 2021 are blue engagement rings, and that could be attributed to the The Crown’s fourth season, starring Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.

Princess Diana’s ring features a 12-carat, oval-shaped Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by 14 diamonds. It caught the attention of the media and the public following her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981. Her sapphire engagement ring was given by her son, Prince William, to Kate Middleton and continues to inspire brides years later. With a Princess Diana character now on screen, thanks to The Crown, more brides are referencing her iconic blue sapphire engagement ring when choosing what they want for themselves.

Refinery29 reported that even a U.K.-based jewelry brand recently reported a 300 percent increase in interest for blue-stone engagement rings.

But according to Brown, sapphires aren’t the only blue stones that will be in demand next year. Aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, and tanzanite are also expected to be big in 2021. She said, “They fit the bill for a to-be-weds’ ‘something blue.’”

She added that emeralds, sapphires, and vintage rings are also expected to be trendy next year, and she believes the green gemstone will be the “it” stone of 2021.

Oval-shaped diamond engagement rings

Also expected to be a big hit next year are oval-shaped diamonds, according to jewelry experts Anubh Shah and Slisha Kankariya-Shah.

Since Victoria’s Secret model Jasmine Tookes announced her engagement to Snapchat executive Juan David Borrero on Instagram last September and revealed her oval diamond engagement ring, oval-shaped rings have shot up in popularity. According to Kankariya-Shah, up to 25 percent of her jewelry company’s customers are now opting for oval cut engagement rings. “The shape has officially overtaken princess-shaped diamonds, making them the second most-requested shape on the site,” she told Refinery29.
