One of the more popular types of earring backs, post backs are very common backings for stud earrings and stud diamond earrings.A post is a thin metal wire that passes through the earlobe to hold the earring in place. Push back earrings are a great backing type for studs or stud earrings as well as lighter drop earrings or drops. Be careful when putting on or taking off clothing as sometimes the backings can come out and get lost.

Screw Backs (Post Screw)

Screw Backs (Post Screw)

A screw post is similar to post backs except for the fact that it has a removable screw called the clutch, which holds the post in place. This is also known as a screw back. A screw back gives you extra security than a regular post backing and is typical used for expensive diamond stud earrings that require increased security. Screw back earrings are a good choice for athletes or for those who like to wear their earrings during physical activities.

Hinged Hoop

This type of earring backing is also called saddleback or hinged snapback. They are best for hoop earrings and huggie earrings. It features a hinged post that snaps onto a groove on the back of the earring. Once you hear the snap or click, you know that your earring is safe. Hinged hoop earrings are said to be both secure and comfortable.

Leverback

Leverback

This type of earring backing is mainly seen on leverback earrings, dangling or dangle earring and drop earrings or drops. It features a spring loaded lever that is attached to a wire that is looped through the ear. The lever is connected by a hinge. Lever back earrings allow for the earring to hang lower, which makes it easier to be seen. This stylish earring back option is perfect for women who like to wear their hair down, which typically hides the earring with their hair. This backing type is also very secure and works well with large or medium valuable designer earrings that drop just below the ear.

French Clip (Omega)

French Clip (Omega)

French clip is also known as omegas or omega backings because it is often shaped exactly like the letter Omega in the Greek alphabet. This earring back can be used for both pierced and non-pierced ears. A French clip earring backing secures the earring by using a simple small screw in place to attach to the back of your ear to hold French clip earrings in place. Some French clip earrings are made with a special clip that twists over the post for an extra secure clip. Some people believe that because of the different type of clasp used that these types of backings will hurt but this is not true. These earring backings are designed to not only be stylish but also feel right on your ears. French clip backings can be used for both diamond earrings and gemstone earrings or a combination of both.

Latch Back

Latch Back

Latch Backs have a hinged backing, usually on hoops that the post goes through a latch back earring has a fishhook of metal that slides through the ear and catches in a loop on the back of the earring. Latch backs are often seen on hoop earrings and dangling earrings. Latch backs are a great option for diamond earrings, gold earrings and gemstone earrings as well. These types of earrings are very difficult to lose and you will not have to worry about losing the earrings as latch backs are secure. This is not a good option to wear with stud earrings however, because you will be able to see the metal around your earlobe.
